His hands trailed after her as she stepped away, but something held his body back. He ran a hand through his hair, not worrying about the fact that it would be standing on end probably. He wasn’t really sure what was happening, what he should be doing, only he knew it wasn’t just stand there. Something told him to apologize, but for what he wasn’t sure. Something told him to go to her, and he almost listened to that part, taking a step towards her before something else spoke to him. This one told him to reel himself back in, that he had overstepped the bounds of propriety already. So he slipped his hands into his pockets and looked at the roof beneath their feet. “If that’s what you want,” he replied quietly.

She nodded her head “Yeah it is” It felt so cold now that she wasn’t in his arms, of course she had to go ruin this too. She shivered as another wind picked up and wrapped her arms around herself. “I should be getting back, its getting late” she didn’t even look at him and walked past him. She walked to the door before realizing she had no idea how to get back to her room. She started to mentally yell at herself, but she kept on going hoping he wouldn’t see her hesitation.
Gus watched her go silently. He barely knew her, so who was he to go after her? When she disappeared down the stairs, he stepped back and sat on the stone barrier at the edge of the roof. The fireworks were still flashing around him in the sky, but he barely noticed. He sat there for a time; how long, he wasn’t sure. But when he noticed that the explosions had ceased, he noticed that his arms were almost shaking with cold. Standing, he looked around and headed back inside. He passed no one on his way to his room and closed the door silently behind him.
